Ron will show you ‘How To Use a Pencil When You Shade’ and some other ‘Pencil Tips’ that will sharpen your skills in this step by step video.
A strong pencil grip is essential to shading. This is only acquired with diligent practice and repetition.
Young art students ages 3 to 6 may find these exercises difficult as their fine motor skills are not ready for this aggressive pencil grip.
A softer pencil will help for those who feel up to doing these more advanced exercises as a soft lead will make a darker mark more easily than a harder lead.
I have three great-grandsons and the 4.75 years old & wants to art. I found your site & seems to really fit the bill. It has got me working with him in doing art.
Thanks for your sharing your skills.
I have 6 grandchildren but no ‘Great’ ones well that’s not quite right they are all great but I guess not as great as yours. Thanks for the thumbs up and let me know if you need anything special for the kids. We are here to help.

From one dad to another …thanks
Hi Ron ,
Thanks for excellent tips to teach kids . Could u please mention which pencil is used to draw them .
Hi Megha,
Just a regular HB pencil called a Dixon Red Primary pencil. Any regular office pencil will work. Softer leads are easier to shade with but they become dull quickly.
You have to hold an HB pencil very firmly when shading the dark parts as the lead is harder. Start with softer pencils and then move to harder ones.
Crayons or Crayola Twistables are great for shading also.
Small tools for small hands.I cut my pencils in half if the students are ages 4 to 6.
Thanks Ron for sharing valuable information. U rock !!
